Human Rights court finds disability discrimination

The court held unanimously that there had been a violation of Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination), taken in conjunction with Article 8 (right to respect for private and family life), of the European Convention on Human Rights as regards the obligation for the applicant to pay a tax to be exempted from military service on medical grounds, despite having been willing to perform his service.

Under Article 41 (just satisfaction) of the Convention, the court awarded the applicant €3,650 for costs and expenses. (The judgment is available only in French.)

More than one of four French workers in the private sector says that he or she has been the victim of discrimination at the workplace, according to a survey published Wednesday in the daily La Tribune. In the survey, which was carried out in March by the government's anti-racism authority Halde and the International Labour Organization, 28 per cent of responding private-sector employees said they had been discriminated against in getting a promotion, a pay rise or some other professional benefit.

That is up from 25 per cent in the same poll last year. The figure for public-sector employees, who were polled for the first time, was 22 per cent.

The overwhelming ethnic group in Wales remains classified as “white British” (95.2%). A further 1.4% of people are neither British nor Irish but white, and 0.7% are Indian. The next largest group trace their ethnic origin to Pakistan (0.5%).
Around one in 10 people said they had experienced discrimination, harassment or victimisation in the last five years. this was true for 15.8% of 16 to 29-year-olds but only 4.6% of those aged 70 and over. 62.6% agreed strongly or tended to agree that people with limiting disabilities face barriers or problems when seeking work.
