Insurance company Eagle Star has lost a High Court bid to stop the Equality Tribunal investigating complaints of discrimination by a woman after her income continuance policy was loaded by 100 per cent, allegedly due to the insurer’s view she was clinincally obese.

Bernadette Treanor (49) claims Eagle Star insinuated to others in 2002 her policy was loaded because she was overweight and due to “other incorrect reasons”, including an alleged imputed heart condition.

A Dutch judge has ordered four teenagers to visit the Anne Frank House museum after finding them guilty of discrimination for insulting Jews at a rally.


The boys, aged 14 to 17, must turn in a report to the Hague Police Judge about their visit the canal house in Amsterdam where Anne Frank and her family hid from Nazi occupiers during World War II.

Judges Jeremy Varcoe and Stuart Southgate are more familiar with ruling on arguments made by others than making a case of their own, but after being shunted out when they reached 70 they launched a discrimination case of their own. Their case seems peculiar, and yet they are merely two of 25,000 workers aged 65-plus who are consigned to the scrap heap annually on grounds of age alone.

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg has said that despite progress in implementing human rights standards in Serbia, many obstacles still remain, and called for the urgent passage of the Anti-discrimination Bill.

In a report on the state of human rights in Serbia presented on March 11, Hammarberg said that Serbia has enhanced its legal and institutional framework for the protection of human rights, but added that its enforcement is still weak.

Mrs McMullan claimed that she was engaged in the same or broadly similar work to three other heads of department in the school and that she was paid less than them on the grounds of her sex.

The Tribunal concluded that her "work as Head of the Food Technology Department is of the same or of a broadly similar nature to that of the three male heads of department".

Both the Government and companies across Britain can breathe a temporary sigh of relief with this morning's ruling that employees have no automatic right to work beyond the age of 65.

The ruling by the European Court of Justice came in a landmark challenge to the UK's national retirement age of 65, which gives employers the right to insist that people stop working when they reach that age, even if they want to carry on.

The judges did say that the Government will have to justify why forced retirement was a legitimate aim and that its justification must be based on social or labour market needs, not employers' interests.

Survey reveals discrimination

About one-fifth of Lithuania’s ethnic minorities suffer from workplace discrimination, according to a survey released Feb. 23 by Lithuania’s Department of Ethnic Minorities and Lithuanians Living Abroad. The survey showed that 23 percent of Russians, 19 percent of Poles and 29 percent of members of other ethnic groups in Lithuania have encountered discrimination while on the job.
